Misys Healthcare Systems Connects Physicians to More than 72,000 Pharmacies with Misys eScript Powered by InstantDx’s OnCallData

New e-Prescribing Solution Integrates with Misys Tiger and Misys Vision, Improving Patient Safety and Physician Efficiencies

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 30, 2007) – Misys Healthcare Systems, LLC, a market leader in healthcare IT, today announced the nationwide availability of Misys eScript™. This web-based e-prescribing solution, powered by OnCallData™ from InstantDx, helps physicians reduce the likelihood of medical errors, improve office efficiencies and increase community connectivity.

With today’s announcement, over 100,000 doctors using Misys® practice-management software now have the ability to electronically route prescriptions to participating pharmacies in seconds while checking for insurance eligibility and patient formularies in real-time.  Misys eScript provides an easy way for physicians to order new prescriptions and quickly approve refill requests from pharmacies. It helps avoid many of the problems associated with the traditional method — writing on a prescription pad or calling into the pharmacy — including misunderstood handwriting and repeated calls between the medical practice and the pharmacy.

More than three billion prescriptions are written annually. A July 2006 report from the Institute of Medicine revealed that medication errors are the most common types of medical errors, adversely affecting at least 1.5 million people annually. Computerized systems, including e-prescribing solutions, show promise for reducing drug-related mistakes.

“Misys Healthcare Systems and InstantDx share the belief that communities connected through technology provide better, safer healthcare for their residents,” said Paul Edge, director of product management, Misys Healthcare Systems. “Misys eScript is an easy way for physicians to avoid medication-related errors and more efficiently fulfill prescription requests, while expanding their use of technology without large costs.”

Misys eScript integrates seamlessly into Misys Healthcare System’s practice management systems, Misys Vision® and Misys Tiger®. It is a great first step for practices not yet ready to adopt a full EMR system. Misys eScript’s many valuable features include:

  • Interaction Alerting
Physicians can view patient medication history and other data to ensure there will not be an adverse medical event such as an allergic reaction or interaction with other medications.

  • Real-Time Formulary Data
Access to healthplan formulary information helps physicians control patients’ costs by indicating whether a prescription is part of a patient’s insurance coverage and if a generic alternative is available.

  • Medication History
Physicians can review patient medication history from retail and mail order pharmacies prior to sending a prescription.

  • Broad Connectivity to Pharmacies and Payers
The InstantDx network includes more than 72,000 retail, chain and mail order pharmacies, and pharmacy benefit managers.

  • Choice of Devices
Misys eScript works with most computer forms, from desktop computers to PDAs and smartphones—anything with an Internet connection and an HTML web browser.

"Real-time interoperability between the physician's practice-management system and the e-prescribing system continues to be an essential, yet all-too-often missing ingredient necessary to accelerate the adoption of e-prescribing," said Dr. Allan M. Weinstein, chairman and CEO of InstantDx.  “By partnering with Misys to create Misys eScripts, InstantDx is able to extend the reach of OnCallData to over 100,000 physicians in the United States with a long-term interoperable system, and to continue to help physicians and their staffs enhance patient safety while realizing the time and cost-saving benefits of an all-in-one e-prescribing system."

Dr. Robert Penney, Ob/Gyn Associates, Holmdel, N.J. adds, “as a specialist, it is essential that I know the medications prescribed by other physicians that my patients are taking.  With the Misys eScript electronic prescribing system, I can easily view a current list of these medications and compare them with medications that I wish to prescribe for my patients to ensure that no potential interactions exist.  The fact that my prescriptions are electronically communicated to the patient’s pharmacy and also checked to see if the prescribed medications are covered by the patient’s insurance presents a real benefit for my practice and our patients.”

OnCallData is certified to connect to the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange™, operated by SureScripts®, and RxHub.  This connectivity facilitates secure, electronic transmission of new prescriptions, refills, eligibility, formulary and medication history between physicians and retail and mail order pharmacies. Today, more than 95 percent of all pharmacies are certified and approximately two-thirds are processing prescriptions electronically.
